Unless Goku never did learn IT in Trunks's time line...
I don't know how this would work, but a lot of things were different in Trunks's time than what ended up turning out in the time continuum that we're familiar with as the actual "time line".

After all, Trunks didn't know that Goku knew IT. Certainly Bulma would've mentioned that if he did know it.

Great point about the IT. The problem is though that Trunks felt the need to intervene on Earth's behalf to defeat Frieza...he knew that Goku defeats him in his time line, and he knew that Goku was going to be arriving 3 hours later. If he didn't want to change history, which he says he doesn't, he would have let Frieza do his thing and let Goku handle it whether or not he got there 3 hours later or teleported instantly(assuming he didn't learn IT in the future time line)

Trunks mentions a time discrepancy and he had to intervene though it's likely HE caused the time discrepancy by intervening. He says so himself, that he changed history for no reason. Goku should have always learned Instant Transmission in all times as he learns it before Trunks arrives in the time machine so he always has it. We're gonna end up getting into theoretical time physics in a little bit I can feel it lol

Trunks says "You still had three hours until your arrival, you couldn't have made it" yet Goku is the one who defeated Frieza in his time line...

This leaves me with two options,

Either A) Goku doesn't learn IT like you say and Frieza romps around on Earth for a few hours waiting for Goku to arrive. Perhaps Piccolo and Vegeta hold him off long enough for Goku to arrive and then he easily dispatches Frieza and King Kold and that's why Trunks knew his landing location and time because he did literally land 3 hours after Frieza did...

or B) That Goku in the future time line used IT to arrive right after Frieza did and kills him but his space ship is still on course to arrive 3 hours later at the location without him in it because it's programmed or something...

aye, this is more confusing than I thought when I posted the question.
Or C: Goku IT with the ship and while practicing IT for the group ,tells them that it probably would've taken 2-3 hours to get back to Earth the conventional way.

This is a great thread, but this is going to bother me every time I re-watch the series now.
I agree, and It's likely just another plot hole in the Trunks continuum.

The fact that Cell arrived from the future 1 year before Trunks initially arrived makes no sense either. Trunks already had the time programmed into the time machine, and he was going back to tell everyone that he beat 17 and 18.

It makes no sense that he'd program it to arrive one year before they met him, and prior to anyone even being on Earth.

Except it couldn't have been an estimation. Right before Goku does arrive in the main time line Trunks says "He should be arriving now" and then immediately after he does meaning it was pretty precise. We also have Bulma's line;

Quote:

DBZ vol 12. Pg 488
Context: Goku just arrived on Earth
Bulma: "B-But he knew were going to arrive at this spot at this moment"

So if Goku did use IT to get to Earth and brought the ship with him he wouldn't have been in that spot either because they flew some time before reaching it. In fact it's so far removed from the battlefield against Frieza that it even has it's own point and location; "About 573...point 18220..." which raises the question how did Trunks know Goku was going to arrive there if he used IT? Remember to use IT you have to focus on a person, not a place(specifically stated) and that means Goku wouldn't have teleported to that random spot in the future time line...

So I can't accept option C. I still think option B is the most likely.
